WELCOME LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Visitor!

If you are interested in studying Hungary and the Central European region; if you plan to learn or brush up your Hungarian; if you want to be part of a lively international community and spend four summer weeks, a semester, or a whole schoolyear in a lovely college town and enjoy inspiring friends and surroundings, you have clicked on the right site.

Our English language programs have been designed to communicate Hungarian Studies and contextual subjects to interested foreigners. We teach Hungarian language in an intensive form, and offer various courses related to Hungary and East-Central Europe in English. We are aware of the special needs and interests of international students in our modern times: beside offering traditional cultural subjects such as history, literature, folklore and arts, we also extend our syllabus towards Eastern-European economics, sociology, current politics and other fields of the social sciences.

We maintain ties with the local administration and small businesses of our region, representatives of which are also involved in our courses as occasional guest lecturers. Numerous field trips, in fact a whole course called Hungary at Large provide international students with direct contacts and "real life" experiences. We have also designed a special program for Hungarian students, Teaching Hungarian Studies for Foreigners, in the framework of which we fully integrate Hungarians in our classes for international students. This is a special feature, nowhere else practiced in Hungary, which naturally brings Hungarian and international students together. They practice language as partners and work on common projects. The Hungarian and Central-European International Studies Center (abbreviated as HSC, Hungarian Studies Center) is eager to develop international contacts, including official ties set up through agreements by which Szeged could become the official study abroad site for students training in Hungarian studies, but, beyond that, in modern history, East-Central European political science, international relations, and other fields. When required, we are ready to organize field trips across East-Central Europe: through our university relations we can offer professionally organized study trips in cooperation with Rumanian, Czech, Slovak and Polish universities.

If you have become interested in joining one of our programs, please, read through carefully this site and then feel free to contact us directly via email. Until we get in contact, I wish you an enjoyable browsing and hope that one day we can see you in our classroom as well as on the streets of our beautiful city.

With best regards, Prof. GYÖRGY E. SZÖNYI
